Tapplock uses fingerprints to unlock your bike

Padlocks have long been used to secure valuable items, but remembering the combination or where the key is can be a hassle. Fingerprints have replaced passwords for electronic devices and are now replacing combinations and keys. The Tapplock one is the world’s first smart fingerprint padlock. It can unlock in 0.8 seconds with no effort compared to a traditional combination lock that can take up to 15 seconds, or several minutes if the combination is forgotten, to open.

Everyone has had the frustrating experience of spinning the dial of a lock in an endless circle, blocked from changing out of gym clothes or accessing garden tools in a shed. Featuring a state-of-the-art capacitive fingerprint sensor, the Tapplock one has an adaptive algorithm that allows the lock to become faster and more accurate with each use. It can store up to 500 fingerprints to allow multiple users to access the lock. And, lock owners can use the Tapplock app to track who opened the lock and when, or to grant mobile access via a remote unlock feature.

The Tapplock One is crafted from Zamak 3 zinc alloy metal and features a cut-resistant 7 mm reinforced stainless steel shackle, strengthened by double-layered lock design with anti-shim and anti-pry technologies. The smart padlock is rated IP66, meaning it is water resistant when the lock is closed and is fully functional between 14 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which is perfect for locking up gates, sheds, boat lockers and bikes. Tapplock one’s battery lasts up to a year off a single two-hour charge, which equates to around 3,000 unlocks per charge and users can check the remaining power using the Tapplock app.

The idea for Tapplock came to David Tao, the founder, while he was using a standard combination lock for his gym locker in college. “The traditional padlock was very difficult to operate and I forgot the combination if I didn’t go to the gym every day. I thought about how fingerprints are used to gain access to smartphones and how that technology would solve the problem of remembering a combination or key to a lock. Plus, using your fingerprint gives you quicker access to your belongings.”

Tapplock one comes in three colors sterling silver, gun metal and midnight black and is priced at $99.00 for a single lock and bundles are available starting at $179 for two. The smart padlock is available for purchase from www.tapplock.com.

ABUS introduces folding lock with built-in alarm

ABUS just introduced an extra level of security to its Bordo line of locks with an alarmed folding bike lock. The Bordo Alarm includes a 3D movement sensor that triggers an alarm should your bike or lock be tampered with. The idea is that the noise will deter thieves and prevent most from finishing “the job.”

ABUS’s Bordo line of folding bike locks ranges from the Bordo Lite to the Bordo XPlus for different security needs. ABUS gives each of its locks a Security Level of 1-15. The Bordo Alarm is rated a Level 10, which ABUS considers to be strong enough to be used “with higher-end bicycles, bikes locked in urban areas and for use in areas of high-theft risk.”

The Bordo Alarm’s movement sensor sets off a 100-decibel alarm for 15 seconds if the lock is tampered with. The sensor also detects if the movement is short and small – such as if someone bumps the bike – and sets off a quick “warning tone.”

The Bordo Alarm is compatible with the ABUS Plus Cylinder system, which allows for one key to be used with multiple different ABUS locks and helps protect against manipulations (lock picking).

The Bordo Alarm is 90 cm long when extended and folds up to a fraction of that size. It retails for $169.99.

More info can be found on the ABUS website.

Review: Rocky Mounts Carlito U-Lock

Locking up your bike is super important. Everyone knows this, right? Still, sometimes you don’t need your big, honkin’ “Mega-Lock”; you just need something that will stand up to a bit of scrutiny and act as a visual deterrent, and doesn’t weigh a million pounds.

Weighing in at just 0.87 lbs, The Rocky Mounts Carlito lightweight U-lock could be just the ticket for those in low-risk areas where you don’t need a hardened steel chain lock, or you just need a lightweight lock for weekends on the rail-to-trail.

Rocky Mounts rates the Carlito at a security level of 4 out of 10, so it’s not quite Fort Knox, but it’s way more than hoping your bike stays put. They have the Carlito in their College Campus/Small Town range, which I would agree with. As someone who lives in a suburban area 15 miles outside a major city, I am fortunate to be able to use locks like this with minimal worry of thievery. That said, I still employ a cable in addition to the Carlito, because I’m slightly paranoid, and I want to make it difficult for would be thieves, even if the potential is less than in other places.

The Carlito has a soft silicon wrapping and comes with 3 keys. Due to the size and weight, it is super easy to toss into a bag and have an emergency lock on hand. This is a nice little lock, but I would not suggest it for more than a small town or weekend ride with a stop at the ice cream shop.

Price: $39.95

nutfix_bicycletimes
The NutFix- is ABUS’ innovative solution to preventing component theft. This stylish lock is THE solution for securing bicycle components, including wheels, seatposts and saddles against would-be thieves. Its real strength lies in its design. The nut is fitted with a mechanism that only releases the screw below when the bike is on its side. This means it is not possible to access the screw unless the bike is on its side.
