SRAM unveils revised Red group, confirms hydraulic disc brakes

New cycling technologies are usually pioneered at the high-end of the market and while today’s announcement isn’t quite shocking, it is exciting: SRAM’s next generation Red road groupset will include hydraulic road disc and rim brakes, the company confirmed today.

If you’re tried hydraulic discs, you certainly can understand how excited we are that they are coming to the road and cyclocross market. We have test a few disc-brake equipped road bikes and we’re never giving up our rotors. Keep an eye out for a full review the disc-brake equipped Volagi Lisco in Issue #16.

SRAM has bypassed the trend of adding an 11th cog or electric motors, but will certainly have the undisputed claim of lowest weight. The rest of the group goes on sale later this month, but the hydraulic options will not be available until this fall. The shifters, derailleurs, brakes, cassettes, and cranks are all completely redesigned. Even the rim brakes get an interesting change: they are not operated with a cam-action single pivot, rather than the more common dual pivot.
