When this press trip came up at the office I shoved all the other staffers aside and politely volunteered myself for duty. I had never been to England, so to get a taste of British culture through a Brooks Saddle factory tour and picnic ride was going to require expertise only and old codger like myself could handle. Aside from bicycles, of course, the main reason I choose to continue my futile search for fortune in the bicycle industry is because of the people I know and meet. There's no shortage of extremely smart and passionate people who are insanely interesting, individualistic personalities. Sure it's cool to be around famous athletes from time to time, but I much more deeply value the less publicly visible people that make the bicycle world go 'round.

Looking Back

Riding a bike. We all find value in this activity. It's the pleasure of freedom and movement, the fulfillment of our promise to live better and healthier, and it's the value of quiet meditation on a solitary ride. In all the history of the bicycle, long before we came along, someone, somewhere took their bicycle and did something with it. There was a purpose and a point to their endeavour.  A challenge, set forth by society or a need to adventure, or a physical hurdle, a race a winner to be had.

A French Highway to Hell (Part 1)

As I turned off the smooth tarmac onto the unpaved road an invisible (and I suspect bearded) man applied a red-hot poker to my forearms and I yelped in pain. The man continued to press down—my forearms were now white hot, and my palms blistered. What the hell was happening? And how on earth had it come to this? I thought back, if only to try to take my mind off the battering.
