PedalFest is a epic, free celebration of all things bicycle in Jack London Square. No matter what type of cyclists you are, you’re sure to find something fun, including a chance to meet some of the most legendary American cyclists.
Want to see some amazing riding? Check out the Whiskydrome, where riders perform stunts in a 30-foot banked, wooden velodrome. Then head to the trials stunt show starring Ryan Leech, Mike Steidley and Casey Holm. If you want to see something really incredible, check out the unicycle basketball games.
But maybe you want to do some pedaling and not just watch? You can hop on a stationary bike to generate electricity for the pedal-powered sound stage with live music and a pedal-powered concession stand with smoothies, ice cream and more.
There will be lots of activities for kids, too, with a kids bicycle rodeo with a skills-building course, safety lessons and instruction for kids in grades 3-6. More advanced kids can hit the pop-up pump track with freeride features, banked turns, teeter totters and more. El Cerrito High School team coach Gary Hill will be on hand to offer skills clinics and basic to advance bike riding Instruction. There’s also the Exploratarium’s Science of Cycling exhibit that examines the science behind bicycling.
Grown-ups can have some fun too, browsing the latest bikes and gear from vendors (including Bicycle Times merchandise!) and swinging by the New Belgium beer garden, where all proceeds Bike East Bay, a non-profit advocacy organization.
You’ll also have a chance to meet some cycling legends in person, as the Legends of Cycling event is the night before the show (Friday night) at Jack London Market Hall. Gary Fisher, Freddie Rodriquez, Jacquie Phelan, Ryan Leech and Nelson Vails will share their stories and highlights from their careers in a moderated conversation with Paul Skilbeck. Beer is donated by New Belgium Brewing Co. and food by Rosamunde Sausage Grill. Tickets for this event are limited, and on sale now. All proceeds from this event benefit the advocacy work of Bike East Bay.
The expo runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the Legends of Cycling event is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Hope to see you there!
