Electronic shifting moves to Ultegra

The rumors are true, though it seemed inevitable, electronic shifting is trickling down to lower priced groupsets. Shimano announced today that there will be an Ultegra-level Di2 group available this October.

Since the introduction of Di2 at the Dura-Ace level many improvements have been made in the wiring harnesses. The original 4-wire system has been replaced by a more simple 2-wire system that allows cable diameters to be reduced by 3mm for lighter weight and a more slim profile. Cable selection has also been simplified with all connectors being identical so that cable inventory becomes easier to manage. Further refinements include more ergonomic shifter/brake lever hoods and brackets due to the electronic integration and a simplified junction box that lends itself to discreet external or hidden internal cable routing. The products are not compatible with Dura-Ace Di2.

Retail price target places Ultegra Di2 below the MSRP of Dura-Ace mechanical.
