Ask any Brompton owner and they’ll tell you, it’s not just a folding bike, it’s a way of life. Since 2010 those owners have been gathering for the Brompton US Championship, an event that combines style, speed and often a little silliness. This year it’s taking place in Washington D.C. It’s not a bike race like you’ve ever seen before. Participants are required to wear a suit jacket, collared shirt and necktie. Sportwear like Lycra is outright banned. The event begins with a Lemans start as racers run to their bikes (folded up of course) then make their way around the 6.5 mile course. The top male and female finishers will earn the right to represent the USA at the Brompton World Championship.
But not everyone is in it to win it. The whole weekend is packed with other events and social rides where every Brompton owner can feel right at home. The Urban Challenge will take riders across town in a city-wide scavenger hunt with Brompton-specific tasks to complete.
The weekend starts off tonight with a reception at the British Embassy, where those little Bromptons will feel right at home.
